Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tractor trailers play an outsized role in the U.S. economy, responsible for delivering goods within states, between states, and also to and from Mexico and Canada. The proof in the importance of shipping by truck can be seen every day on the nation's roads and highways. Despite this large presence, shipping by truck in the U.S. has actually been declining. The Commercial Carrier Journal reports that truck shipments in the U.S. were down 21% in the first quarter of this year versus the corresponding period of 2023. Nevertheless, companies expand and equipment needs replacing, and U.S. trailer manufacturers remain hard at work with both grassroot construction and expansions of existing plants. Industrial Info is tracking more than 45 projects involving trailer-manufacturing in the U.S.

The largest projects in the U.S. trailer sector are obviously for grassroot construction. Timpte Incorporated (David City, Nebraska) manufactures a range of trailer types such as dry-bulk agricultural trailers for items such as grain and fertilizer, energy trailers used in drilling and fracking operations, and aggregate trailers for construction uses including roadbuilding. The company has struck a 50-year lease deal with the Lincoln Airport in Nebraska to construct a 180,000- to 200,000-square-foot manufacturing and distribution center on a 15-acre portion of airport property. The plant will manufacture trailers and their components and accessories. The new plant also will be used to consolidate another Timpte trailer-accessories plant in Lincoln. General contractor Schwisow Construction (Lincoln) began turning dirt on the project earlier this year and is expected to complete the project in the summer of 2025. As its name suggests, Thermo King Corporation (Bloomington, Minnesota) manufactures refrigerated trailers and other equipment for use in the food sector. The company is wrapping up a grassroot manufacturing plant for its refrigerated trailers in Greenville, South Carolina. Thermo King began construction on the facility in 2022, which entailed building a new 295,000-square-foot facility that is expected to begin operations soon, creating more than 200 jobs in the process. Other companies are expanding or renovating existing facilities. Trailstar International (Alliance, Ohio) is a leading manufacturer of dump trailers, which can be tilted to release the trailer's contents. Demand for the company's frame-style, frameless and steel body trailers has grown enough that last year Trailstar began a project to double the size of its existing facility in Alliance with an 80,000-square-foot building addition. General contractor C. Tucker Cope & Associates Incorporated (Columbiana, Ohio) is expected to complete the project in the near future. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.

Other projects involve trailer components. Saylor Wheel LLC, for example, is a startup company that manufactures tire and wheel assemblies for trailers. The company is nearing completion of the renovation of a former peanut warehouse in Greenwood, Mississippi, that will house the company's manufacturing operations. Work is expected to be completed this summer. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

In addition to other grassroot and expansion projects, Industrial Info is tracking more than 30 planned maintenance projects at U.S. trailer plants this year and in the future. Leading the U.S. trailer sector for this year's maintenance programs is Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company (City of Industry, California), which has active programs in place for plants in Utah, Virginia and Arkansas.
