Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Currently, there are 153 active industrial projects totaling $27 billion in Utah, according to Industrial Info's North American Industrial Project Database. The majority of the activity is for projects in the Power, Petroleum Refining and Metals & Minerals industries. This includes about 60 projects totaling $6 billion in the advanced development stage, meaning that they have moved past the permitting and funding approval stage and are in advanced engineering or under construction. More than 50 projects in the state totaling $21 billion have not received approval and are in the early to late planning stages.
Utah is the third-largest state in the Rocky Mountain region for industrial project development, following Arizona ($48.8 billion) and Nevada ($28.6 billion). The Rocky Mountain region includes Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
Across the U.S., oil & gas developers have increased investments in upstream and downstream projects. This holds true in Utah, where construction is under way on the first phase of a potential $1.2 billion crude oil upgrading project near the city of Vernal. Uintah Resources Incorporated (Park City, Utah) is constructing a 45,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) crude oil upgrader to process unconventional waxy Uintah Basin crude oil. International Alliance Group (Houston, Texas) and Mustang Engineering are contractors on the project.
The majority of the projects in Utah are related to power generation, including plans for a nuclear power plant and numerous renewable energy projects. For example, Scatec Solar North America Incorporated (Mountain View, California) could begin construction during the second half of 2013 on a 50-megawatt solar energy project in Cedar City, Utah.
