The Salt Lake City International Airport has been underway with a massive redevelopment project since 2015, which is finally close to wrapping up. The project entails constructing a 1.7 million-square-foot building consisting of three terminals, 72 gates, a 3,600-space parking garage and other facilities. Other manufacturing projects include Williams International's (Walled Lake, Michigan) expansion of its jet engine manufacturing plant in Ogden, Utah. The project includes redeveloping hangars, building a new road entrance and providing supporting equipment to increase the manufacture of small jet engines for the civilian and military aerospace markets. The remediation of a former uranium mill tailings site near Moab helps propel the Metals & Minerals Industry into the second position by value of projects under construction in Utah. The closed mill and uranium tailings are located near the Colorado River, raising concerns about water pollution. Several years ago, the U.S. Department of Energy began hauling the tailings and other contaminated material by rail to a burial site near Crescent Junction, Utah, for safer disposal. The project is expected to last for several years to come, until approximately 16 million tons of uranium tailings are transported to the new site. About 13 million tons have been relocated to date. The Pulp & Paper Industry also makes a strong showing in the state. Among Utah's pulp and paper projects is a grassroot mill in Salt Lake City, which will use 100% old corrugated containers and mixed paper to produce 350,000 tons per year of recycled packaging and paper products. In a news release, Matthew Day of investment firm Peterson Partners said the firm believes the mill will become "a critical piece of the recycling, packaging and e-commerce infrastructure of the West." While hydrogen is the new hot-button energy topic these days, one doesn't hear much about hydrogen storage. Magnum Energy Midstream Holdings (Salt Lake City) is developing two hydrogen storage caverns in Millard County, Utah, with the tops of the caverns between 3,500 and 4,100 feet below the ground surface. The caverns will be approximately 1,200 feet tall and 200 feet in diameter. The facility will hold hydrogen from a nearby production facility.
