Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Construction is set to begin on the 288-megawatt (MW) Dantysk offshore windfarm in the North Sea, as Swedish energy company Vattenfall AB (Stockholm, Sweden) has placed an order for 80 turbines with Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany).
The North Sea windfarm is roughly 70 kilometres west of the German island of Sylt. At full capacity, it will have an output of 1,320 gigawatt-hours, which will be enough to power about 500,000 German homes. Siemens will supply 80 turbines with an output of 3.6 MW each and a rotor diameter of 120 metres. They will be installed in water depths of up to 30 metres over a surface area of 70 square kilometres. The first turbines will be commissioned in 2013, and the windfarm will be fully operational by the end of that year or in early 2014. Siemens also has been contracted to supply services and maintenance for the units.
The Dantysk windfarm is jointly owned by Vattenfall (51%) and Germany's Stadtwerke Munchen GmBH (SWM) (Munich) (49%). The first phase was expected to be 400 MW and has since been downgraded to 288 MW, but there are plans to add 220 turbines, boosting its generating capacity to 1,500 MW. "Vattenfall keeps investing in renewable energy for long-term reduction of our CO2 emissions," said Øystein Løseth, Vattenfall's CEO. "Less than a month ago, we inaugurated Thanet, the world's largest offshore windfarm to date, off the coast of England. With Dantysk, we are continuing our engagement in Germany that we successfully began with our partners in the construction of Alpha Ventus, Germany's first offshore windfarm."
Vattenfall commissioned the Thanet windfarm off the coast of Kent in southeast England last month. The 300-MW windfarm uses 100 Vestas V90 wind turbines, each of which has a capacity of 3 MW. For additional information, see September 23, 2010, article - U.K. Opens World's Largest Windfarm.
"This windfarm represents a milestone in our renewable energy development initiative," said Dr. Kurt Mühlhäuser, head of the SWM executive board. "Together with previously initiated or implemented projects, Dantysk will enable us to supply approximately 800,000 households with renewable electricity, as well as meet the electrical needs of the Munich subway and tram system."
Dantysk is the second offshore windfarm project that Siemens has received from Vattenfall. The companies worked together on the largest Swedish offshore operation, Lillgrund, which was commissioned in 2007. Situated off the south coast of Sweden, Lillgrund uses 48 wind turbines to produce 110 MW of power, enough for approximately 60,000 households.
