Water Clearance Stalls Jain Energy's Sehore and Dewas Biomass Projects

Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--Although Jain Energy Limited (JEL) (Kolkata) has made substantial progress in terms of acquiring statutory clearances for its biomass based power projects in Madhya Pradesh, pending approval for water continues to be a major logjam. Approval for sourcing 1500 cubic meters of water per day from the Parwati River is now pending for more than two years with the state authorities.

JEL has proposed to set up two biomass based power plants of 10 MW capacity each in the Dewas and Sehore districts of the state. JEL is a subsidiary of Jain Group of Industries (Kolkata). JEL already has acquired all requisite clearances including environmental clearance from India's Ministry of Environment and Forests (New Delhi) and the approval for acquiring land.

According to JEL, the proposed power plants will use locally available agricultural residue such as Soyabean and cotton stalk as fuel for power generation, while coal will be the secondary fuel. Pending coal linkage may also affect the project.

The company had started the construction work for both the projects in April 2012 and it was due to be completed by May 2013. The equipments were also ordered to Sitson India Private Limited (Thane, Maharashtra), which is supplying Travelling Grate boiler, while Siemens India Limited (Mumbai) is supplying condensing type steam turbines for these projects.

The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Chattisgarh for setting up a 1200 MW coal based power plant at Jangir-Champa and Korba districts of the state. JEL has also entered it agreement with the Government of Madhya Pradesh for setting up a 1320 MW thermal power plant in the state.
