West Fraser Gears Up for Diffuser Project at Alberta Mill

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--West Fraser Timber Corporation is ramping up pre-construction activities for the installation of a pressure diffuser at its mill in Hinton, Alberta. The company plans to begin the bidding and selection process for a general contractor this March.

The contract will include civil, process, mechanical and building structures. The electrical package will be a separate contract. West Fraser has placed orders for all of the major equipment, including the diffuser, which will be supplied by Metso (Helsinki, Finland) and will begin receiving equipment in June from as far away as Sweden and China.

Startup and tie-ins of the diffuser are planned for October, during a scheduled mill shutdown.

AMEC (Vancouver, British Columbia) was instrumental in the early design phase and now have responsibility for the balance of plant.

The diffuser project is being funded by the Green Transformation Program, which provides up to $1 billion in energy and environmental projects at kraft pulp mills across Canada. According to West Fraser, the installation of a pressure diffuser washer will allow Hinton Pulp to meet these energy efficiency goals by reducing the volume of natural gas consumed and increasing the facility's production of green power.
