Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Baard Energy LLC (Vancouver, Washington) has received $2.5 billion from private investors to finally move forward with the first phase of construction on the $6 billion Ohio River Clean Fuels project in Wellsville, Ohio.
After a three-year wait, Baard now has the funding to purchase more than 500 acres of land near Wellsville for the project. Construction is expected to get under way in the spring or early summer of 2011. Of the 46 U.S. coal gasification projects that Industrial Info is tracking, this could be the first project to actually break ground.
Plans call for the construction of a 53,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) plant that will produce jet, diesel fuels and naphtha by utilizing the Fischer-Tropsch gasification process. The plant will require about 27,000 tons per day of coal to produce the liquid fuels.
The first phase involves preparing the land for construction for the initial 17,500-BBL/d production train, which will have two gasifiers feeding a single Fischer-Tropsch reactor. Second and third phases with the same process configuration will take the plant to a nameplate 53,000-BBL/d capacity.
Once construction gets under way, the project is expected to take three years to complete and will create more than 4,000 construction jobs. When complete, the plant will employ about 400 people.
The 46 coal gasification projects under development in the U.S. represent more than $65 billion in capital spending, but not a single new project has moved into the construction phase.
