One of the largest projects in the state is a major upgrade to Cenovus Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:CVE) (Calgary, Alberta) 50,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) refinery in Superior, Wisconsin. In April 2018, while the refinery was in possession of Husky Energy, an explosion and fire occurred at the plant as it prepared for maintenance work. Cenovus acquired the refinery when it combined with Husky at the beginning of 2021, and the company reaffirmed its plans to rebuild the refinery, which includes replacing three crude and vacuum unit column internals and rebuilding the 11,000-BBL/d fluid catalytic cracking unit. Husky began the rebuild in 2019, and the project is expected to reach completion later this year. Solar power is hitting Wisconsin in a big way, accounting for more than $740 worth of projects under construction. Among these is Alliant Energy Corporation's (NYSE:LNT) (Madison, Wisconsin) Wood County photovoltaic solar plant, about 100 miles east of Green Bay. The facility will use 470,000 bifacial modules on a single-axis tracking system to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of 150 megawatts (MW). Engineering, procurement and construction contractor AZCO Incorporated (Appleton, Wisconsin) kicked off construction last summer, and the project is expected to be completed later this year. Georgia-Pacific LLC (Atlanta, Georgia) is counting on sustained demand for tissue products as it expands its mill in Green Bay by constructing a 60,000-70,000-ton-per-year through-air-dried tissue machine along with new converting equipment to produce bath tissue, napkins, paper towels and related products. Construction kicked off recently, and the project is expected to take about two years to complete. Nine Dragons Paper Holdings Limited (Hong Kong) also is underway with a project reflecting both the U.S.' move away from printed material and increasing packaging use. The company is performing a major conversion on a machine that will result in its ceasing production of white finished paper and the start of production of containerboard. The project kicked off earlier this year and is expected to wrap up in early 2023. Subscribers can click here for more information.

According to a company press release, the $168 million project is its second-largest investment ever in the U.S. and will more than double the facility's milk-processing volume from 300 million pounds per year to 750 million pounds.
