Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately owned second-generation fuel ethanol developer Woodland Biofuels Incorporated (Mississauga, Ontario) has received $4 million in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation to advance development of a cellulosic-based ethanol plant in Sarnia, Ontario.
With initial funding in place, the company is working on additional financing to begin the construction of the plant. Plans involve the construction of a modular plant that will be assembled, broken down, shipped and re-assembled at the Bioindustrial Innovation Centre, in the University of Western Ontario's Sarnia-Lambton Research Park. The company is in talks with Zeton Incorporated (Burlington, Ontario) to construct the plant, and Thermo Design Engineering Limited (Edmonton, Ontario) is performing the engineering.
The plant will utilize Woodlands' catalyzed pressure reduction technology to process wood and agricultural waste into 20 million gallons per year of fuel ethanol. When additional funding is in place, construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2010, and the plant is expected to be fully operational by mid-2011.
Cost estimates to build the plant are in the $20 million range.
There are 37 second-generation cellulosic ethanol plants under development in North America, representing more than $3.6 billion in capital spending.
