ZeaChem Wins $25 Million Grant to Advance Development of Second-Generation Ethanol Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held cellulosic-based ethanol developer ZeaChem Incorporated (Lakewood, Colorado) has signed a cooperative agreement with the Department of Energy (DoE) and received a $25 million grant to advance development of a second-generation ethanol plant in Boardman, Oregon.

The DoE announced that as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, 19 companies would receive more than $560 million in funding for the advancement of second-generation biofuels in the United States. With funds in place, development of the 250,000-gallon-per-year pilot plant will be accelerated. Construction of the facility is expected to begin by late 2010, and the facility should be online by mid-2011. Once the pilot-scale facility is successfully producing fuel, development of a commercial-scale, 50 million-gallon-per-year plant is expected to follow in 2012.

The commercial-scale will process hard and soft wood, switchgrass and corn stover feedstocks into fuel ethanol. The plant will be located in Boardman, Oregon, adjacent to the pilot plant.

There are currently 37 second-generation cellulosic ethanol plants under development in North America, representing more than $3.6 billion in capital spending.
