Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The 1,320-megawatt (MW) Phase IV expansion project at the Zheneng Wenzhou Power Plant received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and construction recently kicked off, according to an announcement from Zhejiang Zheneng Wenzhou Power Generation Company Limited (Wenzhou, Zhejiang), the project owner and a subsidiary of Zhejiang Provincial Energy Group Company Limited (Hangzhou, Zhejiang), on May 9, 2014.
The Zheneng Wenzhou Power Plant is located in Panshi, Baixiang Town, in Yueqing City, which is about 15 kilometers northeast of downtown Wenzhou. The power plant was built in 1990 with a total installed capacity of 1,450 MW, including two 125-MW units built in Phase I, two 300-MW units in Phase II and two 300-MW units in Phase III.
According to the approval, the Phase IV expansion will be furnished with two 660-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired units, together with flue-gas desulfurization and NOx control devices. The expansion will replace the existing units with larger ones. Two 125-MW units built in Phase I have been upgraded to 135 MW each.
The expansion project received consent from the National Energy Administration to kick off pre-stage preparations in December 2012. So far, the main turbine, generator and boiler equipment has been awarded to Shanghai Electric Corporation Limited (Shanghai). Zhejiang Electric Power Design Institute (Hangzhou, Zhejiang) and Zhejiang Tianyin Management Consulting Company Limited (Hangzhou, Zhejiang) are responsible for the design-engineering and construction management for the project, respectively.
The project is to be built into a gigawatt-level "green power plant," with coal consumption lowered to 265.5 grams per kilowatt-hour.
According to the schedule, both units of the project will begin operations at the end of 2015. Upon completion, the project will be able to generate about 7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which will effectively alleviate the power shortage in Wenzhou.
