Zimbabwe is targeting the addition of up to 4,600 megawatts (MW) of power capacity by 2030 as part of a broader effort to address chronic electricity shortages, meet rising demand and strengthen energy security. The country's power expansion is expected to increasingly shift toward renewable energy, with the National Energy Compact targeting an increase in renewable capacity from 1,282 MW in 2024 to 2,640 MW by 2030--an increase of approximately 106%. Renewables are projected to account for 48.6% of Zimbabwe's total installed capacity of 5,432 MW by 2030.
The capacity expansion is closely linked to Zimbabwe's target of achieving 100% household electricity access by 2030, up from approximately 41% in 2024. The electrification programme includes around 1.9 million additional grid connections, supported by grid extensions, mini-grids and standalone solar systems. The strategy is intended to improve access in underserved rural areas while reducing the country's exposure to drought-related hydropower constraints and recurring load-shedding.
To support the energy-sector expansion, Zimbabwe plans to mobilize approximately US$9.13 billion in investment through 2030, including around US$3.81 billion for generation, with a significant share expected from private investors. The programme is being implemented under Zimbabwe's National Energy Compact and aligned with the World Bank and African Development Bank's Mission 300 initiative.
