Zimmer to Strengthen Its Backbone with $1 Billion Acquisition of Spine Disorder Company LDR Holdings
Zimmer Biomet Holdings Incorporated plans to acquire French spinal medical device company LDR Holding Corporation.
Released Wednesday, June 15, 2016
Reported by Annette Kreuger for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Zimmer Biomet Holdings Incorporated. (NYSE:ZBH) (Warsaw, Indiana) has announced a $1 billion plan to acquire French spinal medical device company LDR Holding Corporation. The company views the purchase as way to fortify it's foothold in the estimated $10 billion global spine market.
LDR offers minimally invasive surgical technology for spine disorders and its lead product is Mobi-C CDR, currently the only device approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat both one- and two-level adjacent damaged cervical discs. Cervical disc replacement (CDR) and other minimal incision surgical (MIS) technologies are considered to be among the fastest growing sectors within the lucrative spinal segment. A recent report projects that the global CDR market alone could reach nearly $2 billion by 2021.
The deal is expected to close in the third-quarter 2016. If all goes as planned, LDR would be folded into Zimmer Biomet's existing Spine & Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) business.
The LDR deal, while sizeable, is but a fraction of the $14 billion Zimmer Biomet spent last June to snap up privately owned Biomet. Along with a name change combining both company's monikers, the purchase pushed the company ahead of Stryker Corporation (NYSE:SYK) (Kalamazoo, Michigan) to claim second place in the growing $45 billion muscle and orthopedic injuries market. Industry behemoth Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) (New Brunswick, New Jersey) remains the market's number one manufacturer.
