Verbund-Austrian Hydro Power to Construct New Plants in Austria

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Verbund-Austrian Hydro Power AG (Wien, Austria), a subsidiary of Verbund (Vienna, Austria) and operator of 90 hydropower plants in Austria, is planning to invest more than $730 million for the extension, modernization and construction of various hydropower plants in Austria.

Verbund will spend about $300 million for the construction of the Reisseck II power station, which will connect the hydraulic systems of the Malta hydropower plant group--consisting of the Galgenbichl, Rottau and Moellbruecke power stations--with the Reisseck/Kreuzeck hydropower plant group in the Carinthian Alps. By using already existing storage basins with a natural vertical height of 580 meters, the new powerhouse will increase the current 1,029-megawatt (MW) capacity of the two groups by 430 MW. The two 215-MW vertical reversible pump turbines will be installed in a 5-kilometer subterranean tunnel that will connect the Malta Hauptstufe power station with the Reisseck storage power station. Reisseck II is planned to be operational by 2014.

In addition, the pumped storage power plant Limberg II is already under construction and is located in Salzburg state, between the Moserboden and Wasserfallboden storage basins. The powerhouse cavern will be equipped with two 240-MW reversible pump turbines. This will increase the peaking electricity production capacity of the whole Kaprun power plant group, consisting of the Limberg I (112 MW) and Kaprun Hauptstufe (220 MW) power plants from 332 to 812 megawatts. The plant is scheduled to become operational by March 2012 with a total investment cost of about $430 million.

Austria obtains more than two thirds of its electricity from hydropower stations located in the Alps or the country's rivers. Recently, the Association of Austrian Electricity Companies and the Austrian Energy Ministry announced investments through 2010 that total $3.2 billion for the construction of new power plants and grids. The projects are mainly focused on renewable energy sources.
