Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On July 13, 2009, Pennsylvania State University (University Park, Pennsylvania) opened the doors of its newest facility--the $121 million Hershey Cancer Institute. Following the growing trend of translational research, the building brings patient treatment (clinical care) and medical research together under the same roof. The blended atmosphere fosters effective collaboration. The fundamental purpose of the translational movement is geared to shortening the amount of time for a treatment to make it from the "bench" (lab) to the "bedside" (patient).
The design and engineering of the four-story, 180,000-square-foot Hershey Institute was handled by architects Payette (Boston, Massachusetts), associate architect Array Healthcare Facilities Solutions (King of Prussia, Pennsylvania) and MEP engineer Bard, Rao + Athanas LLC of Watertown, Massachusetts. Only local products were used in the building, and waste from the construction site was recycled. Penn expects to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the project. The Gilbane Building Company (Providence, Rhode Island) served as construction manager.
