Turnaround Scheduled for Polish Jedlicze Refinery in Third Quarter 2010

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Polish PKN ORLEN Group's (WAR:PKN) (Plock) 28,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Jedlicze refinery, located in Jedlicze, Poland, will undergo a turnaround in the third quarter of 2010.

The future planned turnaround, which will entail mainly cleaning and inspection, will affect all the refinery's units. The overhaul is set to start in July 2010 and is expected to last approximately 15 non-production days. The kickoff date still needs to be confirmed.

The refinery's last overhaul was in September 2009. Part of the job during this downtime was cleaning and checking all units, especially the Used Oils Hydrofinishing Unit, which processes used oil and has a regular cleaning routine.

The refinery specializes in the re-refining of used oils. The plant produces base and heating oils out of used oil. The process can be described as follows:

Step 1: Vacuum Distillation

• Used oil arrives
• Rejection of inappropriate feedstocks
• Chemical pretreatment
• Dehydration (Water as steam is cooled and discharged to municipal sewage treatment)
• Vacuum distillation (Asphalt flux is stripped off the bottom and sold for roofing materials. Gasoil is recovered as refinery fuel)
• Lube oil distillates result

Step 2: Hydrofinishing

• Hydrotreating reactor
• Fractionation results in 100-neutral base oil and 300-neutral base oil
• Transport to blender to make into finished lubricants
