Element Power Chile Submits Environmental Declaration for Solar Photovoltaic Complex

Español
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On November 11, Element Power Chile SA (Concepcion, Chile) submitted to Chile's environmental authorities the Declaration of Environmental Impact for the construction of a 90-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) energy complex to be built in the northern region of Tarapaca.

The complex, known as the Pica Solar PV Complex, will consist of three 30-MW plants, named Pica, Altos de Pica and Pintados. The individual plants will be built on three 200-hectare fields near the city of Pica, which were given in concession by the regional secretary of the Ministry of National Assets. Each plant will consist of about 149,000 panels grouped on double-axis trackers.

The three plants will be constructed in phases at the rate of one per year. A resolution from the Environmental Evaluation Service (SEIA) is expected by February 2011, and construction of the first plant is scheduled to kick off by January 2012.

The complex will generate 255 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year during its 35-years lifespan. The energy will be injected to the Sistema Interconectado Norte Grande (SING) and will reduce CO2 emissions by about 156,570 tons per year.

Element Power Chile SA is a subsidiary of Element Power (London, England), which is owned by Hudson Clean Energy Partners (Teaneck, New Jersey). Element Power is an independent energy producer specialized in wind and solar power generation. In June 2009, Element Power submitted to environmental impact documents to the SEIA for a 100-MW windfarm to be constructed in the city of Arauco in the Bio Bio region.
