Celesc to Start Commercial Operation of Hydro Plant in Brazil

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On August 16, 2012, Brazilian power holding company Centrais Eletricas de Santa Catarina S.A. (Celesc) (Florianopolis, Brazil) started commercial operations at a 3-megawatt (MW) Bandeirante hydroelectric power plant, located in Santa Catarina state.

The facility is located on Uruguay river, 4 kilometers southwest of the municipality of Bandeirante. It is equipped with two 1.5-MW, Francis hydro turbine generator sets, provided by manufacturer Mecamidi S.A. (Tolouse, France). The construction of the plant took 17 months.

Currently, Celesc owns and operates 12 small hydroelectric plants with a total capacity of 82 megawatts (MW). Celesc invested $31.5 million in 2011. Among the new projects under way is the hydroelectric Prata (3 MW), which is located at the west end of Santa Catarina State. It came into operation during August 2011. Belmonte hydro power plant (3.6 MW), in the same region, started operation at the end of May 2012. The company also invested in the execution of civil and electromechanical works at Pery power plant to increase the current installed capacity from 4.4 MW to 30 MW. The commercial operation of the new units at the Pery facility is scheduled for December 2012.
