Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--The 540-megawatt (MW) Vuelta de Obligado Power Plant, located in Timbúes in Santa Fe, Argentina, has begun commercial operations. Central Vuelta de Obligado S.A. (CVOSA) (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and the joint venture (JV) formed by Duro Felguera (MCE:MDF) (Oviedo, Spain), GE Power & Water (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) and Fainser S.A. (Buenos Aires, Argentina) recently connected the plant to the local grid.
The plant has two 270-MW MS9001FA GE natural gas combustion turbines.
Construction of the plant began in July 2013. It began operating this month, using the gas turbines. The plant is scheduled to begin operating in combined-cycle mode with a GE waste-heat steam turbine, reaching 800 MW capacity.
The first turbine was connected in the last week of November. The second turbine began commercial operations December 5.
The Vuelta de Obligado Power Plant had a total investment value of $850 million.
Currently in the province of Santa Fe, there are five thermoelectric plants that send more than 1,800 MW to the national grid: Brigadier Lopez Power Plant (Sauce Viejo, Santa Fe) ENARSA S.A. (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Rafaela Power Plant (Rafaela, Santa Fe) ENARSA S.A., Sorrento Power Plant (Rosario, Santa Fe) Generation Rosario S.A., José de San Martin Power Plant (Timbúes, Santa Fe) and Vuelta de Obligado Power Plant.
