Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Continuing its move into wind generation, Xcel Energy Incorporated (NYSE:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) says it will build and own a 300-megawatt (MW) windfarm in South Dakota. Industrial Info is tracking more than $7.5 billion in active wind power projects in South Dakota.
The Dakota Range Windfarm is being developed by Apex Clean Energy (Charlottesville, Virginia). The project will use Vestas wind turbines and has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $486 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. Apex is in planning for a potential Phase II portion of the project, which would add another 300 MW of power to the facility. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Xcel continues to be a leading utility in its acquisition of wind-power projects. In July, the Minnesota Public Commission approved the company's plans to add 1,550 MW of wind generation to its portfolio. Xcel is aiming to add almost 3,400 MW of wind power to its system by the end of 2020. For more information, see July 28, 2017, article - Xcel Energy Progresses with Wind Buildout, Increases Earnings.
South Dakota is one of the Midwest's major states for wind development, although North Dakota and Iowa lead in the value of active projects.

South Dakota boasts one of the region's largest planned wind developments: the 500-MW Dakota Power Community Windfarm. The project is being planned by Dakota Plains Energy (Aberdeen, South Dakota), which is looking to sell the project once it is permitted. The project has an estimated TIV of $1 billion and could begin construction in mid-2019, taking about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Also on the books in the state is the Deuel Harvest Windfarm near Clear Lake. The estimated $600 million project is being developed by Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois), with Nexgen Right of Way Services (Moorehead, Minnesota) acting as consultant. The windfarm has a planned capacity of 300 MW and will use 130 2.3-MW wind turbines, or the equivalent. The project would be constructed on approximately 50,000 acres and could begin construction in the first half of 2019, with completion by the end of that year.
Among the other Midwest projects from which Xcel plans to acquire wind power is Invenergy's Freeborn Wind Energy Center in Minnesota and Iowa. The 200-MW project is expected to begin construction in late 2018 for completion by early 2020. The project is expected to use 100 2-MW turbines. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
