Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Department of Commerce recently released its plan for implementing $50 billion in funding from the CHIPS Act of 2022, which includes $28 billion to support domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Industrial Info is tracking 100 semiconductor projects valued at $184 billion in the U.S.

Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for a full list of detailed project reports.

According to a Commerce Department press release, the $50 million in funding, which is allocated through the CHIPS for America program, includes:
  • $28 billion worth of grants and loans to help with constructing manufacturing plants to produce, assemble and package leading-edge semiconductor logic (processing) and memory chips
  • $11 billion to support research and development
  • $10 billion to increase manufacturing capacity for older semiconductor technologies used in sectors such as defense, automobiles, information technology and medical devices
The department expects to begin requesting applications for the funding from companies by early February.

Among the semiconductor projects being tracked by Industrial Info is Micron Technology Incorporated's (NASDAQ:MU) (Boise, Idaho) $15 billion expansion of its Boise Fab 4 Memory and Semiconductors Campus. The project entails constructing a new building to produce memory chips. The kickoff is expected to begin in April 2023, with completion in 2026.

In announcing the investment, Micron President and Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Mehrotra said: "Our new leading-edge memory manufacturing fab will fuel U.S. technology leadership, ensuring a reliable domestic supply of semiconductors that is critical to economic and national security."

Micron is planning to invest more than $40 billion through 2030 to boost memory-chip manufacturing in the U.S., with production beginning in the second half of the decade.

In total, the company accounts for five semiconductor projects in the U.S., worth $45 billion, including the Boise project and two other major manufacturing facilities in Texas. Subscribers can click here for a full list of Micron projects.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) (Hsinchu, Taiwan), which has the majority of the world's market share of semiconductors, is more than a year into construction of its $12 billion chip fabrication facility in Phoenix, Arizona. The multi-building manufacturing campus will total 3.8 million square feet that will include a four-story, 2.3 million-square-foot fabrication building with an initial production capacity of 20,000 wafers per month as well as supporting equipment to manufacture 5-nanometer semiconductors. The project is expected to wrap up in June 2024. Click here for the project report.

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) (Santa Clara, California) announced last month it entered an agreement with Brookfield Infrastructure Partners LP (NYSE:BIP) (Toronto, Ontario) that sets up a co-investment program in order to build out Intel's semiconductor plants. For more information on the agreement, Intel's related projects and the CHIPS Act legislation, see Industrial Info's August 24, 2022, article - Intel Enters Semiconductor Co-Investment Agreement.

SkyWater Technology Foundry (Bloomington, Minnesota) is looking toward a grassroot semiconductor manufacturing plant in West Lafayette, Indiana, which would begin construction in March 2023. The 600,000-square-foot facility will feature production for the automotive, aerospace and biomedical industries, among others. The project is expected to wrap up in late 2024.
