Written by Daniel Graeber for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Plaquemines facility for exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Louisiana is operating close to its peak capacity, a few short months after its inaugural injection of gas marked the start of commercial operations.

IIR Energy confirmed the facility began drawing in more than 100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day for liquefaction operations in mid-December. Operated by Venture Global LNG (NYSE:VG) (Arlington, Virginia), the Plaquemines facility is fed primarily by the Gator Express Pipeline, a network tied to larger arteries carrying natural gas from regional shale deposits such as the Haynesville Shale.

Venture Global made a final investment decision on Plaquemines in 2022, and federal regulators in November gave the company permission to introduce natural gas into the export plant.

Data from IIR Energy show the facility took in about 15.9 billion cubic feet of feedgas on Thursday, a considerable ramp-up from December levels. Exports from the facility were about 1.6 billion cubic feet, climbing to 86% of its peak capacity over a few short months.

The first-ever cargo from Plaquemines was loaded on December 26 onto the Venture Global Bayou, one of nine new vessels in Venture Global's fleet that are designed to transport LNG. The cargo was shipped to German energy company EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (Karlsruhe, Germany).

Of the 29 vessels laden with LNG that departed U.S. export terminals during the seven-day period ending February 26, two of them left from Plaquemines. The Sabine Pass terminal, controlled by Cheniere Energy Incorporated (Houston, Texas), is the largest export facility in the country, and the busiest, with eight vessels departing this week.

Once fully operational, the 18-train facility at Plaquemines will be the second-largest LNG export facility in the country, with about 3.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in processing capacity, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

The United States exported its first-ever batch of LNG in 2016 and evolved to become the largest exporter in the world by 2022, leapfrogging Australia and Qatar. Former President Joe Biden enacted a pause on new export terminals during his tenure while the administration studied the potential for emissions up and down the supply chain.

Unravelling Biden's green agenda, President Donald Trump overturned that order in one of his first acts of office and has since signed off on the permits necessary for Commonwealth LNG (Houston, Texas) to prepare for another export facility in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.

Commonwealth is working to develop a facility that would have a design capacity of about 1.2 Bcf/d in LNG exports. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

Exports of LNG are supported by record-level natural gas production in the United States. Cold winter weather had throttled some production, and IIR Energy found production was 104.2 Bcf/d as of Friday. Total annual production is expected to average 114.7 Bcf/d this year.

LNG exports are expected to average 14 Bcf/d this year, though output is already closer to 16 Bcf/d, the expected average for next year.
