ABB Lands Transmission Deal for Worlds Largest Planned Offshore Windfarm

Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Swiss engineering firm ABB Group (NYSE:ABB) (Zurich, Switzerland) has landed a contract worth more than $250 million to connect the proposed Hornsea Project One offshore windfarm in the U.K. to the electricity grid.

The contract was awarded by project developer DONG Energy A/S (Fredericia, Denmark) just two months after it made a final decision to go ahead with the $6 billion project. Located 120 kilometers (km) off the coast of Yorkshire in the North Sea, Hornsea Project One will have a generating capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW), enough to power more than one million homes. It comprises the 600-megawatt (MW) Hornsea Heron and 600-MW Hornsea Njord projects. On completion in 2020, it will be largest offshore windfarm, a title currently held by another U.K. project, the 630-MW London Array windfarm located in Thames Estuary in England. ABB said it will supply alternating current (AC) submarine cable systems for the Eastern and Western circuit, which will transmit power across a distance of around 120-km from the windfarm to the east coast of the U.K..

"High-voltage cable links are playing a key role in transmitting clean power to millions of people, efficiently and reliably," said Claudio Facchin, president of ABB's Power Grids division.

"Hornsea Project One is record-breaking in terms of scale of energy production, physical size and its distance from shore, and we have worked together with ABB to find the best technical and commercial solutions," explained Duncan Clark, programme director for Hornsea Project One at DONG Energy. "This joint approach has helped create the right solutions for this large and challenging project and has also enabled us to drive the lifetime costs in the right direction for the next generation of offshore wind sites. Hornsea Project One will cover more than 400 square kilometers.

German engineering firm Siemens AG (FWB:SIE) (Munich, Germany) has been contracted to supply 171 of its new 7-MW wind turbines for the project. Many of these will be manufactured at the company's new turbine production facility being developed in Hull, England.
