The plant is known as Helioenergy I and has an installed capacity of 50 megawatts (MW), which will generate enough renewable electricity to supply approximately 26,000 homes. The facility is the first of two identical plants that will make up the complex. It officially entered into commercial operation September 1. The second plant, Helioenergy II, is planned to come online in early 2012.
Both power plants occupy an area of nearly 544 acres, which is equivalent to more than 300 soccer fields. They consist of 121,000 installed mirrors that concentrate sunlight and use it to generate steam at a temperature of 752 degrees Fahrenheit. The steam drives a 50-MW Siemens turbine at each unit to generate power.
The renewable energy produced by the two plants will prevent approximately 63,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
Through this joint venture, Abengoa provides its expertise in the solar technology and operations field, while E.ON brings its long-standing experience gained after the construction and operation of many conventional power stations.
