Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Solar power activity is heating up around the Greater Houston, Texas, area. In some cases, these solar plants are accompanied by battery energy storage systems (BESS), but in addition, a standalone BESS unit is being constructed within Houston itself. Industrial Info is tracking more than $3.8 billion worth of solar power and BESS projects in Harris County, home to Houston, in addition to five surrounding counties.
Two major solar completions in the area were announced this week, including Acciona Energia's (Alcobendas, Spain) Red-Tailed Hawk project in Wharton County, which leads the Greater Houston area in solar and BESS investment, with nearly $1.9 billion worth of these projects underway. Engineering, procurement and construction contractor Wanzek Construction Incorporated (Fargo, North Dakota) began work on the project in the second half of 2022, and it was announced this week that the facility is now fully operational, generating up to 458 megawatts (MW) for the surrounding area. The site is Acciona's fifth in Texas. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.
The Red-Tailed Hawk project joins other projects in Wharton County, including the largest: a $1.2 billion undertaking from the North American renewable energy arm of Italy's Enel Group (Rome). Construction on the Gulfstar solar farm kicked off toward the end of last year and entails placing more than 1.6 million solar modules and 178 inverters on a 3,200-acre site that will provide about 450 MW of solar generation. For times of high demand or lower solar penetration, a 152-MW BESS unit will be able to provide power. The project is expected to be completed in 2027. Subscribers can click here to learn more.
The other major solar project in the area for which completion was announced this week was Sabanci Climate Technologies' (Istanbul, Turkey) 218-MW Cutlass 2 solar farm in Fort Bend County, which ranks second for current solar and BESS installations in the Greater Houston area. Cutlass 2 joins the previously completed Cutlass 1 project to provide more than 500 MW. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report and May 23, 2024, article - Bechtel Takes Role in Multiple U.S. Power Projects.
Another Fort Bend County solar plant is anticipated to be completed in early 2025. Work on Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners' (Copenhagen, Denmark) Fighting Jays solar farm is being headed up by M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota). The project entails situating more than 1 million panels that will provide up to 350 MW of power at full output. The project suffered a setback in late March, when a severe hailstorm damaged several installed panels. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
In addition to Fort Bend and Wharton counties, other solar projects are underway in Brazoria County, Liberty County and Waller County, which ranks third in overall spending. Waller County's $650 million worth of investment comes from a single project: EnCap Investments' (Houston, Texas) Parliament photovoltaic project, which is being built on a 3,400-acre site in the north of the county and will provide approximately 640 MW of emissions-free generation when completed in 2026. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
Finally, while most of the BESS units being constructed in the U.S. today accompany solar generation facilities, Jupiter Power LLC (Austin, Texas) plans to bring more than 100 MW of standalone BESS technology to Houston itself in the form of its Callisto I project. Construction on the Callisto I BESS unit is underway, and when completed later this year, the facility will provide 101.63 MW of available power.
