Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Winter will be a little less frightful for elves and reindeers this year. Alaska's first large-scale wood-fuel pellet plant is operational in North Pole, Alaska. The plant is owned by Superior Pellet Fuels Incorporated (North Pole). An open house was held last month.
Superior Pellet Fuels began construction on the 12,000-square-foot facility in the spring of 2009, and the air permit was issued in July of that year. The plant will utilize waste streams from local sawmills, land-clearing projects, and fire breaks set by the state's forest management for feedstock. The plant will produce 30,000 tons the first year, sufficient to heat approximately 7,000 homes. The factory will begin with 12 employees, but that could increase as production is ramped up.
Currently, no other wood-fuel pellet production facilities are planned for Alaska.
Superior Pellet Fuels' campus is on Westcott Drive in North Pole, Alaska, in Fairbanks North Star County, which is approximately 14.5 miles southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska.
