Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Utility holding company Alliant Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:LNT) (Madison, Wisconsin), in the hopes of reducing its carbon footprint, is underway with or has wrapped up several wind projects in Iowa, a natural gas-fired facility in Wisconsin, as well as emissions reduction projects at its coal-fired facilities. In the company's recent earnings conference call, Alliant President and Chief Operating Officer John Larsen said, "We continue to make great progress as we transition to a more efficient, modern and balanced energy portfolio." Industrial Info is tracking projects valued at $3.5 billion that involve Alliant.

Larsen first talked of the company's project completions in first-quarter 2019: "In March, we achieved another major milestone when we placed 470 megawatts (MW) of wind into service for our Iowa customers. These two new windfarms, Upland Prairie and English Farms, were on schedule and below budget." Construction on the 300-MW Upland Prairie Windfarm near Spencer began in 2017. The facility uses 122 General Electric (NYSE:GE) wind turbine generators. White Construction (Indianapolis, Indiana) provided engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) on the project, which had an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $580 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Construction on the 170-MW English Farms Windfarm near Grinnell began late last year. The windfarm will use 69 wind turbines. White Construction also provided EPC on the project, which had an estimated TIV of $280 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The projects are part of Alliant's ambitious plans to construct 1 gigawatt of wind power in Iowa. Larsen said, "We're on track to construct an additional 530 MW of new wind for Iowa customers in 2020. This added wind will complete the 1,000 MW of renewable investment approved by the Iowa Utilities Board. Construction is going well, and we plan to begin the turbine-installation phase next month."

Among the remaining projects is the 200-MW expansion of Alliant's Whispering Willow North Windfarm near Bradford. The facility will use 80 2.5-MW wind turbine generators. Construction on the $260 million project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Alliant is taking other steps to reduce carbon emissions. Larsen said, "Another major milestone in the first quarter was the completion of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system at our Ottumwa Generating Station in Iowa. This environmental improvement project supports compliance obligations under the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule and advances our objective of improving overall air emissions. This project also represents the last planned air-emission control system for our fleet." Construction of the SCR at the 726-MW Unit 1 of the coal-fired plant began in late 2016, with Alberici Corporation (Saint Louis, Missouri) providing EPC. The system will reduce the emissions of oxides of nitrogen. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

While the company's air emissions projects may be done, other regulations for coal-fired plants loom, specifically the Coal Combustion Residual (CCR) rule, which seeks to regulate the requirements for the disposal of coal ash. Alliant is in the planning stage for a CCR-based coal-ash handling project at Ottumwa, which could entail a number of changes. The project could kick off in early 2021, for completion in late 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Alliant also is underway with the dismantlement and demolition of the 311-MW, coal-fired Sutherland Generating Station in Marshalltown, Iowa. Bierlein Companies Incorporated (Midland, Michigan) is the general contractor on the project, which began earlier this year and is expected to be completed by yearend. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Among Alliant's largest projects is the construction of a natural gas-fired facility in Wisconsin. Larsen said, "As we continue to transition our energy mix, we're making great progress on the new West Riverside Energy Center, located near Beloit, Wisconsin. This 730-MW, highly efficient, natural gas resource is over 80% complete and expected to go into service by the end of this year. The project is on track to be completed on time and on budget." Construction began in the first half of 2017. AECOM (NYSE:ACM) (Los Angeles, California) is providing EPC on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $725 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Alliant reported first-quarter 2019 net income $125.1 million, compared with $120.9 million in first-quarter 2018.
