Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Utility holding company Alliant Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:LNT) (Madison, Wisconsin) is progressing with a buildout of cleaner-generating power sources with the addition of wind and natural gas-fired projects, as well as the closure of older facilities in its service territory. Industrial Info is tracking more than $2.8 billion in active Alliant projects.
In the company's recent earnings conference call, Chief Executive Officer John Larsen gave an update on some of the company's projects, including its planned wind power buildout in Iowa for its utility Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL) (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). Earlier this year, the company completed 470 megawatts (MW) of wind projects in that state. Larsen said the Upland Prairie and English Farms wind additions were completed on schedule and below budget. Construction on the 300-MW Upland Prairie project in Clay County began in late 2017, while construction on the 170-MW English Farms windfarm began late last year. White Construction (Indianapolis, Indiana) provided engineering, procurement and construction on both projects, which had a combined total investment value (TIV) of $860 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Upland Prairie and English Farms.
Larsen said, "We're making nice progress with the remaining 530 MW of new wind for our Iowa customers. This will complete IPL's total planned 1,000 MW of additional renewable energy by the end of 2020." Among Alliant's underway wind projects in Iowa is the Phase II expansion of the Whispering Willow North Windfarm near Bradford. The project entails constructing 80 General Electric (NYSE:GE) wind turbine generators to provide an additional 200 MW of wind energy. Construction on the $400 million project began earlier this year and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. Among Alliant's other wind project in Iowa are the 200-MW Golden Plains Windfarm in Winnebago County and the 210-MW Richland Windfarm in Sac County.
Among Alliant's biggest projects is the construction of a natural gas-fired facility in Wisconsin. Construction on the 730-MW West Riverside Energy Center near Beloit began in the first half of 2017 and is expected to be completed this year. The project has an estimated TIV of $725 million. Larsen said the plant is more than 90% complete and is expected to be on-time and on-budget. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Larsen said Alliant also is expanding its use of solar generation through the construction of smaller projects. Among its planned solar projects is the construction of an installation accompanying the natural gas-fired plant. Construction on the 2- to 5-MW installation is set to begin next year. HDR Engineering Incorporated (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is the engineer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
As Alliant shifts to these new forms of generation, it is closing down coal-fired and older natural gas-fired facilities. Among these projects is the dismantlement and demolition of the coal-fired Sutherland Generating Station in Marshalltown, Iowa, about 50 miles northeast of Des Moines. The facility had three generating units with a combined capacity of 311 MW. The project began earlier this year and is expected to be completed by yearend. Also facing dismantlement is Alliant's 131-MW Fox Lake natural gas-fired power plant in Sherburn, Minnesota. The project is underway and expected to be completed by the end of the year. Bierlein Companies Incorporated (Midland, Michigan) is the general contractor on both projects. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Sutherland and Fox Lake.
Alliant reported second-quarter 2019 net income of $94.6 million, compared with $100.4 million in the prior-year quarter.
