Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Beginning next month, Altis Company Limited, which is part of Olympus Corporation (TYO:7733) (Tokyo, Japan), will begin construction on a line addition to expand its plastic-to-oil plant in the village of Miyada, Nagano, which is about 150 kilometers west of Tokyo. Construction is scheduled for completion during the second quarter of 2011.
Olympus is well-known for optical and imaging equipment, as well as for medical devices. Despite the passage of the 1995 Packaging Recycling Act, medical wastes were excluded from recycling. Therefore, Olympus created Altis to promote medical-waste plastic recycling. At the current petrochemical plant, medical-waste plastics are collected and put through a rigorous sterilization process. The plastics then undergo pyrolysis and liquefaction to produce an oil that is similar to light diesel.
Altis will be building the line addition on a 1,400-square-meter parcel of land on the premises of an existing Altis petrochemical complex. When the US $110 million-line addition is completed, the plant will be able to process an additional 6 tons of plastic per day. The resulting oil is used at the petrochemical complex for further manufacturing, or as a fuel to power boilers. Altis' goal is to be in full compliance with the Revised Rationalization in Energy Use Law, which was implemented in Japan to reduce the country's reliance on fossil fuels. The plastic-to-liquid project began in 2008 as a government-subsidized program to help meet the standards of the Kyoto Protocol to decrease CO2.
