Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Midwestern utility Ameren Corporation (NYSE:AEE) (St. Louis, Missouri) is moving aggressively to modernize its generation, transmission and distribution assets across its service area of Illinois, Iowa and Missouri, with the latter state alone seeing its $6.3 billion of modernization investment from the company through 2024 jump to more than $7.6 billion. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $930 million in active projects from Ameren, more than half of which is attributed to projects under construction.

"In addition to our robust $16 billion, five-year capital plan in the years 2025 to 2029, we foresee a strong pipeline of additional investment opportunities of at least $20 billion that will deliver significant value to all of our stakeholders," said Warner Baxter, the chief executive officer of Ameren, in a recent quarterly earnings-related conference call. "These projects will be consistent with Missouri's Smart Energy Plan, as well as Illinois' Modernization Action Plan, both of which were designed to make our energy grid stronger, smarter, and cleaner."
One of the largest Ameren projects underway is the Illinois River Transmission Project, a 345-kilovolt line from Palmyra, Missouri, to Sugar Creek, Indiana. Two major segments include the 76-mile, $65 million portion from Sugar Creek to Kansas, Illinois, and the 52-mile, $45 million portion from Kansas to Decatur, Illinois. The former is expected to kick off this summer and wrap up in second-quarter 2021; the latter already has begun construction and is expected to wrap up toward the end of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Sugar Creek-to-Kansas and Kansas-to-Decatur segments.
Ameren's Illinois subsidiary also expects to begin construction this summer on the $31.2 million Veterans Parkway Substation in Normal, Illinois, as part of the company's McLean County Reliability Project. The subsidiary began construction in December on its 10-mile, $12.6 million line from the Normal East Substation to the McLean County Substation, set to wrap up toward the end of the year. Ameren hopes to improve energy reliability for local customers. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the substation and Normal-to-McLean segment.
Further down the line, Ameren is proposing a pair of projects to strengthen its transmission capacity in Missouri. An estimated $23 million gas-insulated substation in Wright City would bolster grid stability, while an estimated $110 million rebuilding of power lines from Whitewater to Bonne Terre, running about 63 miles, would be a key part of the company's planned St. Francois County Transmission Line Replacement & Improvement Project. As currently envisioned, the projects would kick off in December 2021 and December 2022, respectively. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the substation and line overhaul projects.
"Ameren Missouri is making significant investments to modernize the energy grid, and enhance how customers receive and consume energy," Baxter said. "In 2019, Ameren Missouri invested $1 billion under the plan of more than 900 projects that are already delivering value to our customers."
Baxter added that Ameren received regulatory approvals in 2019 from the Missouri Public Service Commission to acquire 700 megawatts (MW) of new wind generation at two sites in the Show-Me State.
Ameren Missouri is preparing to begin construction later this year on an estimated $15 million turbine replacement for Unit 15 at a hydropower station in Keokuk, Iowa, which would boost the unit's output from 9 to 9.6 MW. The subsidiary also is proposing a similar, estimated $15 million turbine replacement for Unit 5, which, if approved, would not begin construction until December 2021 at the earliest. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports for Unit 15 and Unit 5.
