Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ameren Corporation (NYSE:AEE) (St. Louis, Missouri), a holding company for utilities in Illinois and Missouri, enjoyed new service rates in 2017, but often saw them offset by lower electric retail sales, driven largely by mild summer temperatures. The company is planning $11 billion in capital expenditures across its utilities for 2018 through 2022. Industrial Info is tracking $1.45 billion in active projects involving Ameren, most of which are set to begin or finish construction in 2018.

Capital expenditures for 2017 totaled $2.13 billion, a 2.7% increase from 2016, which the company attributed mostly to increased infrastructure investments made at Ameren's subsidiaries in Illinois.

Illinois also accounts for 61% of the $11 billion in projected capital spending through 2022, divided among Ameren Illinois Natural Gas, Ameren Illinois Electric Distribution, Ameren Illinois Transmission and Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois. Among the transmission projects are key segments to two major power-line plans: the $45 million line from Mt. Zion to Kansas, Illinois, which is part of the Illinois River Transmission project, and the $76 million line from Rock County to Knox County, Illinois, which is part of the Spoon River Transmission Line project.

The 52-mile Illinois River line is expected to reduce congestion on the existing system. The Spoon River segment will run 38 miles from MidAmerican Energy Company's (Des Moines, Iowa) Oak Grove Substation in Rock Island to Ameren's new Sandburg substation in Knox County, which completed its $30 million construction early last year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Illinois River segment, Spoon River segment and Spoon River substation.

Ameren also is nearing construction on two other transmission projects in Illinois: the $383 million Big Muddy River Transmission project, which will run 185 miles from Grand Towers to points in Baldwin, Joppa and West Frankfurt; and the $111 million Newton-to-Huntsville project, which will run 52 miles. The Spoon River, Big Muddy and Newton-to-Huntsville projects are part of the Ameren's Grand Rivers Transmission Project, which is designed continuously carry 345 kilovolts from Iowa to Indiana. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Big Muddy and Newton-to-Huntsville projects.

Ameren Missouri, the parent company's other utility, accounts for about 39% of the projected spending through 2022. "Ameren Missouri announced a forward-thinking plan, under which it expects to accelerate its transition to a cleaner, more diversified energy portfolio, including significant investments in renewable generation by 2020," said Warner Baxter, the chief executive officer of Ameren, in a recent earnings-related press release.

Among Ameren Missouri's active renewable projects is $60 million in turbine replacements at a hydropower station in Keokuk, Iowa, which sits on the border with Missouri. The utility is replacing four older turbines with new Francis turbines, with a total output of 36 MW. It also is considering a proposed, $14.5 million upgrade of governors and exciters on units 1 to 15 at the station, which, if approved, would not begin construction until early 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the turbine replacements and unit upgrades.

Ameren's revenue for 2017 were reported to be $6.1 billion, slightly up from $6 billion in 2016. However, profits dropped 20% to $523 million, including a net loss of $60 million in the fourth quarter. Ameren executives said in a recent press release that the revaluation of deferred taxes, as a result of changes in Illinois and federal income tax rates, decreased earnings by a combined $168 million.
