Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--After witnessing billions of dollars worth of delayed chemical projects over the past 12 months, optimism exists about what the coming year could have in store. Research by Industrial Info is identifying fewer and fewer projects that have been pushed or delayed beyond 2010, as well as an increasing amount of confidence in the projects planned for next year. Staffing levels at most plants are expected to noticeably increase by the summer of next year, providing yet another signal that improvements might be on the way.
In recent weeks the financial and industrial markets have begun to perform more strongly than they have in more than a year. As consumer confidence and spending return to healthier levels, the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) will begin to show more tangible signs of recovery, with increases in operating rates and, eventually, in investment spending.
There have been some segments of the CPI, such as industrial gases, that have remained relatively strong, even amid slumps in refinery investments. Stimulus dollars are beginning to show up in certain segments of the industry, specifically in the manufacture of chemicals for processing photovoltaic cells and projects funded by the Department of Energy.
