Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Amidst a period of government transition in Argentina, fuel prices have surged by an average of 40% due to the devaluation of the peso. The Argentine state oil company YPF (Buenos Aires) and private corporation Shell-Raizen, both market leaders, were quick to adjust their prices following the announcements by the country's new finance minister. YPF dominates the fuel sales segment with a substantial 55% market share, followed by Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) (London, England) with a 23% and Axion (Buenos Aires) with 20%.
The newly elected president, together with the finance minister, communicated a series of economic measures that prompted oil companies to raise costs at the pumps. Over the past few weeks, prices have witnessed at least two increments owing to the depreciation of the national currency.
The minister outlined various measures, including the reduction of subsidies for fuel and public transport, the elimination of the licensing system for importing goods, a halt to government spending on infrastructure with an emphasis on private sector investment, among other actions.
Given that fuel costs significantly impact the production costs of various goods and services in the economy, it is anticipated that the announced increases by oil companies will contribute to inflationary pressures.
