Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--From now through 2025, there are 103 nuclear units scheduled for installation in the Asia-Pacific region. This major addition of nuclear power will assist in meeting ever-growing power demands and in reducing the region's carbon emissions.
China and India together will hold a 60% stake in new nuclear installations, according to the latest forecast from GlobalData.
From 2000 through 2012, installed nuclear power capacity increased from 67,000 megawatts (MW) to 88,000 MW at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 2.4%. From 2012 to 2025, the AAGR will be 6%, for a total of 187,000 MW.
Turkey and Vietnam lead among countries with emerging nuclear power, with both planning to install six reactors by 2025. The reactors planned by Turkey will be larger than those to be planned by Vietnam.
Other global regions will witness an increase in nuclear installations, with 88 reactors in Europe, 24 reactors in North America, eight in the Middle East and Africa, and three in South and Central America.
Although the nuclear new-build program is expected to create numerous opportunities, driven by power demand, increasing fossil fuel prices, mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and lower electricity costs, major challenges face the industry in terms of anti-nuclear public opinion and government policy changes, making investment in nuclear projects risky.
