The massive bushfires across Australia are now a potential threat to mining operations. New South Wales is the worst-hit state, with more than 130 fires burning across the state. Centennial Coal has temporarily ceased production at its Springvale Coal Mine, as well as the Clarence Coal Mine, due to bushfire smoke entering the mines via the ventilation systems. Approximately 100 workers were evacuated from SIMEC Australia's Tahmoor coking coal mine due to the fire threat.
In Tasmania, emergency services are working hard to keep a fire from approaching the Cornwall coal mine in Fingal, as well as protecting the assets in the surrounding area. Department of Fire and Emergency Services Western Australia has declared total fire bans in the Kalgoorlie gold-field area.
