Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Sedgman Limited (ASX:SDM) (Perth, Western Australia), a leading Australian resource-sector service company, recently completed the coal-handling processing plant at Centennial Coal Company Limited's (ASX:CEY) (Sydney, New South Wales) Springvale mine.
The extension of the wash plant, located in the western region of New South Wales, approximately 18 kilometers north of Lithgow, has increased production capacity at the underground coal mine from 2 million to 3 million metric tons per year, or 300 to 450 metric tons per hour. Details include the replacement of an old coal jig with a new dense-media circuit; installation of a new fine-coal module; and the decommissioning of a 10-meter-diameter tailings thickening tank.
The expansion of the coal-handling facility at Springvale follows other additions to the coal plant, in preparation for a major expansion in the Lithgow area. The expansion was proposed by Centennial Coal and equal joint venture partner SK Kores Proprietary Limited, a subsidiary of the Korea Resources Corporation (KS:RESCOZ) (Seoul, South Korea).
Earlier this year, a longwall addition was completed at the Springvale mine that is designed to expand the existing mining operations. The addition included the installation of a longwall unit to increase production; the unit was made by Joy Mining Machinery (Warrendale, Pennsylvania), a subsidiary of Joy Global Incorporated (NYSE:JOY) (Milwaukee, Wisconsin).
A lidsdale siding upgrade is nearing completion. The upgrade includes the extension of the existing rail siding, as well as the construction and installation of new aboveground and underground conveying systems.
Commercial operations at the site have continued since 1992. Coal is extracted using underground longwall mining methods and is transferred by conveyor to the surface, where it is either transported by a dedicated overland conveyor to the Mt. Piper and Wallerawang power stations, or processed for export at Centennial's Western Main facility.
Centennial Coal has been in the Australian spotlight recently after more than 400 submissions were lodged about the proposed expansion of two Lithgow district coal mines. The company hopes to expand operations at the Angus Place mine to extract up to 4 million metric tons of coal annually for up to 25 years, and at Springvale colliery to mine 4.5 million metric tons for 13 years.
