Australia's Data Center Market to Continue Growing

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The demand for data centers has increased across the globe, including in Australia, fueled by an increase in remote working, online schooling and virtual entertainment during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Australian data center market is expected to reach a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5% by 2026.

Australia's federal government has implemented the Australia Government Data Centre Strategy 2010-2025 for the growth of this sector.

New South Wales' state government announced the temporary reclassification of data centers as State Significant Developments (SSDs), which "are deemed to have state significance due to the size, economic value or potential impacts," according to the government website. The designation enables the assessment of related projects at the state level, as opposed to the local council level.

The key data center operators in Australia are AirTrunk (North Sydney), NextDC (Brisbane), Equinix (Redwood City, California), Canberra Data Centres (Fyshwick) and Macquarie Telecom (Sydney).

Industrial Info is tracking 85 data center projects in Australia, worth US$3.27 billion. New South Wales and Victoria lead among provinces in the number of projects.
