Beijing to Build Four Environmental-Friendly Garbage Disposal Projects

This year the total investment in facility building is $345.7 million and the total investment before 2010 can be up to $959.2 million.

Every year, more than five million tons of garbage is produced in Beijing, among which 90% is currently disposed through landfill. Beijing intends to lower the rate to 30% by speeding up development in environmental friendly methods.

Among the wasted materials to be disposed of in environmental friendly ways, 40% will be burnt to produce electricity in Beijing's four garbage furnacing (burning) factories planned to be built or under construction.

The four garbage furnacing (burning) factories are Asuwei Factory in Beijing’s Northern Changping District, Gaoantun Factory in Eastern Chaoyang District, Liulitun Factory in Western Haidian District and Nangong Factory in Southern Daxing District. The four factories, built on Beijing’s current garbage landfill, will burn 5,000 tons of garbage. The Asuwei project will cost $103.9 million.

The Asuwei factory firedamp section has just been put to operation this week. It can make the most of the 13 million cubic meters of firedamp produced from garbage landfill to generate 20 million kWh of electricity every year, which is equal to burning 10,000 tons of coal.

Before the end of this year, Beijing will also build two factories with capacity of 400 tons a day to dispose food leftovers, which account for half of Beijing's total amount of garbage produced.

Beijing’s previously built garbage landfill items were not all harm-free. Garbage buried there leaks harmful liquid and gas, threatening Beijing’s underground water and air condition. The problem has become increasingly important in face of 2008’s Olympic Games.
