Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--India's private-sector hydroelectric project developer, Bhilwara Energy Limited (BEL) has received clearance from the country's Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) for the development of its proposed 780-megawatt (MW) Nyamjung Chhu hydroelectric project in Arunachal Pradesh. The project, which was granted environment clearance by MoEF almost a year ago, was held up due to the delay in granting forest clearance.
The Nyamjung Chhu hydroelectric project will be a run-of-the-river scheme with peaking pondage to harness the hydropower potential of the Nyamjung Chhu River through the construction of a diversion barrage near Zimithang village, in the Tawang district of the northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.
In October 2006, the state government of Arunachal Pradesh awarded the work for the development of hydropower potential of the Nyamjung Chhu Basin to BEL.
The project will utilize a gross head of about 1,057.4 meters for the generation of 3,430.29 gigawatt-hours of electrical energy annually. The cost of the project was estimated at $1.37 billion at December 2010 pricing level.
The project involves construction of 11.2-meter-high barrage, a 23,450-meter-long concrete-lined circular shaped head race tunnel (HRT) with a 6.2-meter diameter and a 1,965-meter tail race tunnel (TRT) with a 7-meter diameter, as well as the installation of six 130-MW vertical-shaft Pelton hydro turbines with 144.45-megavolt-ampere synchronous-type generator set in an underground powerhouse. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017.
Bhilwara Energy Limited (BEL) is the flagship company of the LNJ Bhilwara Group engaged in the development and operation power assets in India and overseas. The Bhilwara Group was among the first private-sector companies to venture into the Indian power sector when the sector was opened for private participation in 1991. In 1993, the Group entered into a memorandum of understanding with the state of Himachal Pradesh for implementation of two hydroelectric projects in the Kullu district of the state: the 100-MW Malana project and the 192-MW Allain Duhangan project.
