Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Last week, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced it plans to auction four parcels of land in southern Nevada for solar-generation development. Nevada ranks sixth among U.S. states in terms of installed solar capacity, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, and Industrial Info is tracking solar projects across the state.
The auction is in support of President Joe Biden's goal of permitting 25 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy on public lands by 2025 and achieving a carbon-free electricity grid by 2035.
The four parcels up for grabs total 23,675 acres of land, according to the BLM, and if fully developed, "have the potential to produce nearly three gigawatts of renewable energy." The agency added it "has received substantial interest for development of solar energy projects in the area" and expects to evaluate additional proposals. The auction is planned for June 27.
Industrial Info is tracking two solar projects near Las Vegas that are under construction: NV Energy Incorporated's (Las Vegas, Nevada) $300 million Dry Lake solar-plus-storage project, which kicked off last year. The solar plant is expected to utilize 375,000 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels from First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) to provide 150 MW of solar generation, and a 100-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) will accompany the plant. The completion is expected in early 2024. NV Energy is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Incorporated (NYSE:BRK.A) (Omaha, Nebraska). Arevia Power's (Glendale, California) $726 million Gemini solar project kicked off in early 2022 and will also utilize First Solar panels (1.1 million), to provide 440 MW of solar power. Arevia is partnering with Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners Pty Limited (Queensland, Australia) on the project. Kiewit Corporation (Lenexa, Kansas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. In terms of planned projects, EDF Renewables North America's (San Diego, California) Chuckwalla solar-plus-storage project on the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians reservation, 35 miles northeast of Las Vegas, will provide a generation capacity of 250 MW, while the BESS unit will provide 180 MW of output. Construction is set to begin later this year, putting the facility on track to begin operations in 2024. Subscribers can see detailed projects reports on the solar farm and BESS unit.
According to the latest state-by-state data from the Solar Energy Industries Association, Nevada ranks sixth in the nation in terms of installed solar capacity, with 5,366 megawatts (MW); 856 MW was installed in 2022. The trade association projects the state will gain an additional 5,813 MW of capacity in the next five years.
