Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) reports Brazil expanded its power capacity by 10.85 gigawatts (GW) throughout 2024, a record for the South American nation since 1997, when the agency began collecting data. The projections for new capacity expected last year were surpassed by 747 megawatts (MW).
Wind and solar energy continue to lead Brazil's new power capacity, representing 91% of the total, with the former accounting for 39.26% of the increase and the latter for the remaining 51.87%.
In 2024, some 147 solar photovoltaic (PV) parks with a capacity of 5.6 GW and 121 wind plants that can produce 4.3 GW were installed.
This is in line with Brazil's energy goal, as the government of Inacion Lula da Silva seeks to make his nation a renewable powerhouse by extracting strategic minerals for the construction of energy transition technologies, the development of renewable energy supply chains, and their deployment.
The states of Minas Gerais, Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte saw the largest increase in new power capacity throughout last year.
According to the National Electricity Operator (ONS), Brazil has an installed capacity of 230 GW in the national interconnected system, dominated by hydropower, which accounts for almost 50% of the total.
In line with electricity capacity expansion, a recent report by ONS suggests Brazil could construct more than 1,200 kilometers of new transmission lines and more than 14,000 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of new transformers between 2025 and 2029.
