Brazilian Consortium to Carry Out Design Studies for El Cimarron Hydroelectric Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In December 2008, El Salvador's Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa (CEL) (San Salvador) launched a bidding process to develop the detailed design of the 261-megawatt (MW) El Cimarron Hydroelectric Power Plant, to be built at the highest point of the Lempa River in El Salvador. The local utility recently awarded the design studies contract for the project's detailed design to consortium Intertechne-Geoconsult, and work is expected to take about 15 months. When the detailed design has been completed, CEL will call for bids to build the plant. Additionally, a financing contract is expected to be settled once design work has moved forward.

According to CEL's authorities, the project will be developed under a build, operate, transfer program.

El Cimarron, with an estimated cost of nearly $500 million, will involve the construction of a dam and the use of a 15.3-square-kilometer reservoir. The plant would have four Pelton Vertical Axis turbines and generate an average of 687 gigawatt-hours per year. Power would be sent to the national grid by way of a 230-kilovolt, 35-kilometer transmission line.
