Brazil's Fosfertil to Complete Feasibility Studies on Salitre Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Fosfertil Fertilizantes Fosfatados SA (Sao Paulo, Brazil) is advancing with the $1.2 billion Salitre phosphate-rock mine project in Brazil. The project is located in the city of Patrocinio, in the state of Minas Gerais in southern Brazil.

The project entails construction of a 2 million-ton-per-year phosphate-rock mine and a chemical industrial complex, which will produce 560,000 tons per year of phosphoric acid and 1.2 million tons per year of monoammonium phosphate, triple superphosphate and simple superphosphate.

A consortium of Brazilian companies Promon Engenharia Limitada (Sao Paulo), Construções e Comércio Camargo Correa SA (Sao Paulo) and Construtora Norberto Odebrecht SA (Rio de Janeiro) is in charge of the engineering, construction and management of the entire project. A decision to move forward with the project is expected to take place in March 2010. Construction is planned to start by the end of 2010, with project completion set for the beginning of 2012.

Fosfertil is a supplier of raw materials to the fertilizer industry and also supplies inputs to chemical companies. According to a company press release, in 2007, 50% of the Brazilian phosphorous consumption was supplied by imports. Once operational, the Salitre project will provide a 34% increase in Brazil's phosphate supply and a 60% increase in phosphoric acid.
