Brazil's Renova Energia Plans $1.3 Billion Investment in Wind Projects

Español
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Renova Energia SA (Sao Paulo, Brazil) expects to invest more than $1.3 billion in the renewable energy market between 2011 and 2013.

Renova's primary focus is on the construction and operation of renewable energy sources such as small hydropower plants and windfarms. The firm has 42 megawatts (MW) in operation today, via three small hydropower plants: the 14.8-MW Cachoeira da Lixa plant, the 11-MW Colino I plant and the 16-MW Colino II plant.

Renova plans to expand its installed capacity up to 488.6 MW in 2013 through wind power projects on 20 windfarms, representing combined investments of about $1.3 billion. A wind complex between Guanambi and Igapora (composed of 14 windfarms) is under construction and has a scheduled startup date of July 2012. The wind complex in Caetite (made up six windfarms) is in the engineering stage and is scheduled to begin construction in 2012, with commercial operations set to begin in 2013.

Renova will have another 2,205-MW windfarm portfolio readily available for future investment. The firm is considering entering the free market, from which it could obtain better prices than from the government-sponsored regulated energy market.

Currently, Brazil's installed wind power capacity accounts for 936 MW, spread across 50 windfarms, mostly located in the southeastern and northeastern parts of the country. It is forecast that by 2019 windfarm units will generate approximately 6,041 MW of energy in the country.

Currently in Brazil, there are 863 MW of wind projects under construction and 3,022 MW in the planning stages. Projections indicate that the wind power capacity in Brazil will grow about 320% in the coming decade.
