Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--South African Group GSC Holdings (Johannesburg) plans to set up a 500-megawatt (MW) solar complex in Cameroon. The country's Ministry of Water and Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GSC Energy Limited, a part of GSC Holdings, to build the $ 2.2-billion solar power complex in the Adamaoua region in northern Cameroon.
As per the terms of the contract, the solar complex will house several individual power plants of various capacities and would also be based on various solar technologies. GSC Energy is leading a consortium of solar power companies such as PLC System (Acerra, Italy), Sun Value GmbH (Ostermiething, Austria) and Consolidated Power Projects (Pty) Limited (Conco) (Johannesburg, South Africa).
GSC Energy now is conducting feasibility studies which are expected to continue until the second quarter of 2015. Construction for the complex is expected to kick-off by 2016 and power production is expected to begin by the end of 2019.
GSC Holdings is a diverse business interest spanning across industries such as mining, telecommunications, engineering and energy, while Conco is an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor specialized in high-voltage turnkey solutions for various sectors including utilities, mining, petroleum oil & gas and heavy industry.
In order to meet growing power demand in both domestic and industrial segments, Cameroon intends to spend $12 billion to triple its electricity production to 3,000 MW by 2020 through a mix of hydro, thermal and solar projects. Currently, the central African country has an installed generation capacity of 933 MW.
State Utility Société Nationale d'Electricité du Cameroun (SONEL) (Douala, Cameroon) is responsible for generation and distribution of power in the country serving more than 22 million people. Until 2001, supply of electricity in Cameroon was facilitated by Cameroon's National Electricity Company (SONAL), which was created in 1974 by the merger of Electric Energy Company of Cameroon (ENELCAM) and Electricity Development Corporation (EDC).
