CGNPC Moves To Increase Local Sourcing of Equipment for Nuclear Power Projects in China

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The signing ceremony for a batch of locally sourced equipment supply contracts for China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) (Shenzhen)'s nuclear power projects was held in Beijing on July 21, 2009. ZHANG Guobao, Vice Director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Director of the National Energy Administration (NEA), QIAN Zhimin, Chairman of CGNPC, SI Zefu, General Manager of Dongfang Electric Corporation (Chengdu, Sichuan), Huang Dinan, President of Shanghai Electric Company Limited (Shanghai), DONG Qiang, Vice President of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) (Beijing), and XU Lejiang, Chairman of Baosteel Group Corporation (Shanghai), attended the ceremony, CGNPC announced on July 22, 2009.

These contracts awarded to Dongfang Electric, Shanghai Electric, China Shipbuilding and Baosteel in Beijing cover the key equipment for CGNPC's projects based on improved Chinese pressurized reactor (CPR1000) technology and those to be built based on European pressurized reactor (EPR) technology, including the components and driving mechanism of control stick inside the reactor for Hongyanhe II, where two 1,000-megawatt (MW) units will be built based on improved Chinese pressurized reactor (CPR1000) technology, and the reactor pressure vessels and regulators for the 2# unit of Taishan Nuclear Power Station, a 1,750-MW unit to be built based on European pressurized reactor (EPR) technology. Localization of these equipments will effectively improve China's nuclear power equipment manufacture capability as well as its international competitive force, said CGNPC in its announcement.

CGNPC started to build its first nuclear power station in Daya Bay, where only 1% of equipment was supplied locally. For Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Station currently under construction in Liaoning, the localization rate of equipment has reached 75%. It's expected that the localization rate will surpass 85% for the #5, #6 units of Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station in the future, according to QIAN Zhimin's address on the ceremony.
