Chile's Conama Rejects Proposal for Termoelectrica Pacifico Coal-Fired Power Project
Rio Seco is set to appeal a rejection by Chile's environmental regulator Conama for the Termoelectrica Pacifico coal-fired power project.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Latin American investor Southern Cross Group (Santiago, Chile), through Chilean subsidiary Rio Seco, had submitted to Chile's environmental regulator Conama the environmental documents for the Termoelectrica Pacifico coal-fired power project in February of this year. The project's approval was rejected by Conama, and Rio Seco is now set to appeal the decision.
In addition to the environmental assessment documents, Conama evaluated 37 oppositions to the project presented by different public services entities and neighboring communities.
According to officials, the initiative does not comply with the current environmental regulations aiming at mitigation, reparation and compensation, and does not meet the needs for risk prevention and accident-control measures.
The project, valued at about $750 million, envisioned the construction of a 350-megawatt coal-fired plant which would use two pulverized coal units and be installed 63 kilometers south of Iquique, in Region I of Chile.
