Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Empresas Coipsa S.A. (Santiago de Chile, Chile) has recently received funds from the Inter-American Investment Corporation (Washington, D.C.) to develop the Energia Pacifico S.A. project, which consists of building and operating a biomass cogeneration power plant in San Francisco de Mostazal, located in Chile's Region VI. The new plant will have an installed capacity of 15.6 megawatts (MW) and will produce 297,500 tons of steam per year.
The $28.6 million plant will be equipped with a 15.6-MW TGM (Sao Paulo, Brazil) turbine and a Biochamm (Agrolandia, Brazil) boiler. According to company officials, the steam and some of the power will be sold to Compania Papelera del Pacífico S.A., a shareholder of Energia Pacifico. The remaining steam and power will be sold to Chile's central interconnected system.
The construction kickoff is planned for next December, and the commercial startup of the plant is scheduled for the last quarter of 2009.
Empresas Coipsa S.A. is seeking greenhouse gas reduction qualifications and expects to get carbon credits under the Clean Development Mechanism requirements of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change.
