China Guodian's 1,700-Megawatt Houziyan Hydropower Station Receives Approval

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--China Guodian Corporation's (Beijing) 1,700-megawatt (MW) Houziyan Hydropower Station received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on November 8, according to a company announcement on November 16.

The newly approved Houziyan Hydropower Station, located in Kangding County of Garze prefecture in the Sichuan province, is the ninth step in the "three-reservoir + 22 cascade projects" development scheme planned on the main stream of the Dadu River. The project is also a key project planned in the nation's 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-10) and will support economic and social development for the Tibetan living area in Sichuan. The project is one of the 23 key projects listed in the nation's western development program and scheduled to be newly constructed in 2010.

According to the approval, the project is mainly comprised of a 223.5-meter-high concrete face rockfill dam, the second highest of its kind in China, which will form a reservoir with total storage capacity of 704 million cubic meters to support a powerhouse with four 425-MW hydraulic turbine generating units.

The project will be built and operated by Dadu Hydropower Development Company Limited (Chengdu, Sichuan), a subsidiary of GD Power Development Company Limited (Beijing) (SHA: 600795), the listed flagship of China Guodian Corporation. HydroChina Chengdu Engineering Corporation is responsible for the design and engineering of the project. Dadu Hydropower Development Company kicked off pre-stage preparation for the project in September 2007. The preliminary feasibility study and the detailed feasibility study of the project passed examination in 2008 and 2009, respectively. In March 2011, the project achieved the first stage of river diversion. According to the schedule, the project will achieve river-closure at the end of November 2011. The main dam is expected to begin placement in April 2013; the first unit of the project is expected to begin operations in July 2016, and the entire project is expected to begin operation in June 2017.
