China Huaneng's Nuozadu Hydropower Station Receives Final Approval

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing)--Yunnan Huaneng Lancang River Hydropower Company Limited's (Kunming, Yunnan) 5,850-megawatt (MW) Nuozadu hydropower station, the largest hydropower station in southwest China's Yunnan province, received final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on March 19, 2011, China Huaneng Group (Beijing) announced on March 28, 2011.

The Nuozadu Hydropower Station, located in Puer, on the Lancang River, is the fifth project of the "two-reservoir/eight cascade project" development planned for the middle and downstream reaches of the Lancang River. The project is the largest power station planned in the Lancang River Valley, in terms of both installation and reservoir capacity.

The project involves a 261.5-meter-high earth-core rockfill dam with a total reservoir capacity of 22.74 billion cubic meters under the normal pool level of 812 meters above sea level, a left bank underground powerhouse and a flood-discharge facilities. The powerhouse will be furnished with nine hydraulic turbine generating units, each with a generating capacity of 650 MW. The annual average power output of the project will be 23.91 billion kilowatt-hours. Total investment in the project will be about $6.82 billion.

As a key project for the nation's "transmitting power from the west to the east" plan, and a key project for the construction of a national hydropower base in Yunnan province, the project has huge economic benefits and will be an important contribution to the nation's energy conservation and emission reduction efforts.

Compared with conventional coal-fired power generation, the project could save more than 9.56 million metric tons of standard coal and reduce the emission of more than 18.77 million metric tons of carbon dioxide every year upon completion.

As a world-class mega-project, the project will also face a lot of technical challenges, including construction of the highest earth-core rockfill dam in Asia, the largest discharge power and the highest velocity in its spillway, and one of the largest underground powerhouses built.
